Question Do I really need SP1 !-comming SP 2

Hi From Texas
My computer is running OK. I have done a few up dates over the years. I do get a notification on my computer that pops up and tells me do I want to install new update.--- O ! ,---I have heard , many months back , that a some didn't like the SP 1. Some had trouble. I don't know how true it was on what they say because it can be other things on their computer and SP1 gets the blame. Anyway , I want to here what some of you guys think.--O--, Should I install SP1 , would 'System Restore' work and let me restore my computer to another time and get rid of SP 1 ?-------------------------Don

P.S.: I will be back to the computer at 1:30 AM Texas time

Installing SP1 should not cause any problems as far as I know. If so, they were probaby mended by later patches, which should all be downloaded. You could try and get the CD with all of the updates, SP1 I assume is one package on that CD. If you have cable or DSL then I would just recommend installing all updates, SP1 and all.

This assuming you have XP. I think maybe the updates for the other systems are on the CD as well, not sure.

Dont think you can remove it after its installed unless you reformat (not that you would want to anyways) but you should get it for the security updates.

SP1a is a standard part of any XP Home or Pro you buy today. If it still had problems a whole bunch of us would be in deep do do! Don't worry about uninstalling it or trying to go back to a restore point. You'll be fine. After SP1 is installed, make sure you go back and install all the Critical Updates. Recheck again after all are installed cuz you'll probably find one or two more to correct an update.

Yeah, what PR said.

I would download EVERYTHING in the critical updates and driver categories and select those you wish to use (or seem necessary) in Win XP.

Service Packs are cumulative. You don't need SP1 in order to install SP2.

With 56K it'll take a very very long time. The download is somewhat about 260 MB.
I think you can call microsoft and they'll send you a CD with SP1.

But right now I'd say don't mess with it, SP2 is now really almost here, and then I'd get SP2.
SP1 has been around for over 2 years now. If you managed to live all the 2 years without it, then I think waiting the last few weeks for SP2 shouldn't be a problem.

If you are gatting a pop-up asking if you want to install the updates, then they should have already been downloaded in the background, and as far as I know they would have been installed when you restarted your machine, at least I would hope they did as it is unprotected machines like yours that cause so many problems for other users by leaving vulnerabilities un-patched.

And that is exactly why you should be installing SP1. Yes all SPs are cumulative, and installing SP2 will give you the fixes of SP1. However, you should be patching up your system now, not in future whenever an SP is supposed to be released. SP1 has been out for a while now, and by now all the issues have been documented, and most of the issues with SP1 has been patched. It is recognized as a stable patch. This way even if you cannot put in SP2 for whatever reason, you still are reasonably patched.

Save yourself a ton of time and send for the FREE MS Security Update disk. It contains SP1 and all security updates thru Feb 04 as well as IE6, Direct X9 and Windows Media Player 9. Takes a couple weeks to get it, but running it from a CD drive is a ton faster that doing it by dial up. Works for all os's from 98 thru XP. Here's where to order:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu.../cd/order.mspx

You'll still need to download the latest updates not included with the CD tho.

As OEM guy hinted at, you should alway keep your machine fully up-to-date. There are way to many security holes, esp. in windows, that you just can't leave unpatched. I do believe that SP1a also improved upon the windows firewall, which if you aren't behind a NAT firewall, you NEED to have on...esp. if on broadband. Access to your computer is just way to easy with it off, and in windows.

So, to answer the question, as others have, don't wait for sp2. Get sp1a and all the critical patches, espeically since it will take forever to get sp2. With all the news being all over microsoft's security problems, when this bad boy comes out, it will be a little difficult to get, even for broadband users. That is just a guess, but the m$ servers are going to be swamped.

Don't waste your time, get all the patches, including sp1.
