Question Windows 2000 Server & 200MHz

I have an NT 4.0 Server operating on an old Pentium 200 MHZ chip with 256KB memory. I'm in the process of building a new PC and don't want to relegate this machine to a coffee table YET.

Can I operate with Windows 2000 Pro Server on this machine and usee it for non-intensive applications, e.g. home automation applications, network firewall, etc.? What problems or issues should I be concerned about?

How about a Win98SE with 128KB memory -- Can it handle Windows 2000 Pro Client?

Thanks in advanc e for the help ...

I thinkthe amount of ram more importand then the amount of mhrz of the procesor. how mutch ram do you have???

I have installed Windows 2000 on a P-150 with 64MB RAM, it was incredibly slow.

I think it could work, I'd suggest "stripping" down Windows, no extra software and get rid of everything you don't want or need.

However, for tasks such as a network firewall (never looked into home automation), given your specs., I'd recomend you try Linux if you find Windows won't work.

BTW, what do you mean by home automation? I'm thinking like control your lights and other stuff, is that correct? If so, how would you go about this?

There are a number of ways to do it ... I'm not doing it yet (still in the research phase). There is a technology referred to as X10. I believe you get an adaptor/board for the PC, along with some software and use the PC for setup and scheduling. I'm told there are some pretty sophisticated systems out there and it has been suggested to dedicate a PC because of the use (not the demand on the PC).

A google search on "home automation" can get you going ...
