How to prevent Windows XP from doing this…

Windows XP changes the way I like to have my folders displayed on me. For example I in the “My Pictures” folder I like to have the folders displayed in thumbnails and then when clicked on displayed in filmstrip, but sometimes windows changes it from filmstrip to thumbnails, it also changes the folders in the “My Music” folder from tiles to thumbnails sometimes as well. How to I keep Windows from doing this? Thanks.

Yes you can.

XP will show your folders in the view you last used. Make sure that you have the option selected to "Remember folder view" You can access this from explorer>tools>folder options>view.

It is possible the "don't save settings" in group policy was enabled. You can check gpedit.msc to see if this is the case.

That's only if he is running XP Pro, as XP Home doesn't have the group policy editor.

True, I keep forgetting about home. I almost never use a system with home.

Bigandy,

Thanks for the link telling how to “fix” this. I have a question about this part though “Right-click on "Shell", then follow to New--Key--DWORD Value. Name this item " BagMRU Size” Does this mean create a new Key and then within that Key a new DWORD Value and name that Value BagMRU Size? Or does it mean to just create a DWORD Value named BagMRU Size within “Shell”? Same with the “ShellNoRoam”. And this will not mess anything up will it? Thanks.

From the description, it seems that you would create the DWORD value BagMRU Size. Because if you try clicking on a key, you cannot set a value. That said, I wouldn't do this until someone can confirm, as it's not the smartest thing to be messing in the registry.

Why not just go to the settings in settings for the start menu and choose Classic Start Menu and use the old style start menu like they use in Win98?

For anyone interested in this I suggest that you download Tweak Ui from here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx It is a Microsoft program that allows you to make some neat tweaks with XP without having to make the registry changes yourself, and how many folder views window rememebers is one if them. You can change it form 400 to whatever you like.
