MS-DOS Compatibility Mode!

I just finished building a computer from old parts I had lying around and I noticed something strange after I loaded Windows 98. When you right click on "my computer" then select "properties" then the performance tab, it says that my file system and virtual memory are operating in MS-DOS compatibility mode! And that drive: C is also using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

Frankly I don't know what I did wrong, or if I did anything wrong at all. I've formatted many a hard drive and never had this happen, so I'm kinda stumped. Anybody out there know why this would happen?

Thanks!

Check for flagged devices in device manager - and please provide some system details. You probably need some drivers, but we need some details before we can advise you what to go chase down.

3 things are flagged

1. Standard PS/2 Mouse
2. My printer(HP Photosmart 1315) I doubt my printer's causing this problem - never bothered to install drivers on this computer
Now here's something of interest:
3. Win 9x-ME Promise Fastrak 100 Lite Controller - I believe(?) the drivers are on the motherboard CD but it keeps telling me that the best drivers are already being used yet it's flagged. So I'm not sure what's going on

Asus A7V133 motherboard
AMD Athlon 1.1 Mhz Processor
Windows ME

Try installing that driver for the Promise controller. This is exactly why things are running in compatibility mode.

compatibility for older program

one of my favorie programs, Colonize, yeah, that old one, I just cannot get to work no matter what variations I choose in Compatibility mode in win xp pro. I'm about ready to stick in an old 1 gig HD formatted to win98 just so I can play it. Can anyone suggest please a better way because shortly I will be installing two 250 GB hard drives, and I'm not sure at this point if I want that much space as win98. Oh, and if anyone can get it to run in win xp pro, they can have my first born son, i never learned how to spin gold from straw.

Bambi, please start your own thread for your issue. This "compatiblity mode" thread is a totally different thing. Thank you.

Apologies

Forgive, please, GLC, I had read Striker's post about compatibility, and thought that was what this thread was about. Mea Culpa.

Oh well, at least you can all have a giggle now about the new dummie.

Cheers. I'm learning LOTS.

Well, I'm doing a little late-night repair for a neighbor's system & noticed your thread: I haven't seen any new thread started, so I'll copy&paste this to it if you get one going.

Here is a link to a site for that game that mentions patches & has a few in its downloads area [that is, if the game is "Colonization" originally from the DOS/Win 3.1 days] http://www.colonization.biz

A thread from another forum that didn't resolve an XP issue yet, but does contain a patch download link: http://www.gidforums.com/t-2245.html

Some folks mention a DOS version that seems to work in XP, and on the Colonization website there's some mention of success running in XP with other versions as well. . . I imagine if you want to try Compatibility Mode one more time, make sure to go back to the Windows version that matches your Colonization version best - and while installing the game, right-click on the "Setup.exe" (or whatever the installer is named) and select Compatibility & follow the Compatibility Wizard prompts.

. . . & Welcome to the PC Mechanic forums

. . . Gary
