Xp wont install
Hi,
I had a computer with XP pro - all worked fine-ish, then I decided a new mobo was in order. So I replaced it with a Gigabyte Mobo. I tried to install Xp Pro to no avail. It wouldn't boot from the CD. I should add it was a copied disk. As I made a copy of my XP Pro for back up purposes and subsequently lost the original disk. I installed home fine using the original disk. Everything works ok, but this is my mates disk so I don't want to activate it which means I now have 26 days left to re install Pro. I have tried creating the floppy disk all 6 of them to enable the comp to read the copied I mean archived XP pro disk. Didn't work. I've tried loading up the XP Pro whilst XP Home has loaded. This initiates the install and copies relevant files etc. but when it reboots it goes no further. And have to boot Home. Any ideas I would rather not have to buy XP Pro for a second time. |

Since you put in a new motherboard, you need to enter XP setup and do a repair installation of the operating system.
This is because the system still has your old motherboard drivers installed, and the repair installation will fix that |

I tried that but the comp physically wouldn't read the archived disk.

What exactly do you mean by archived XP Pro disk?
If it is a backup copy (a verbatim copy of your original) then it should have worked on booting from CD. You should be calling Microsoft and explaining to them how you misplaced the original CD; once they verify that you do have a legal license of XP Pro they will send out a copy of the CD (sometimes for a nominal S&H). The procedures and fone #s are here: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;326246 |

I just copied the original disk to a CDR and put away the original for safe keeping.
I'll contact MS as a last resort. I'd rather get it sorted tonight. So I start getting my desktop back into it's original state. Any other ideas on how to or why it wont install XP Pro. Thanks |

I tried again and this time it said that the 1st cab file was corrupt or missing. Yet when exploring the disk in Home, all files seem fine.

There is a difference between seeming fine and being fine with files that have been copied to media. A number of things could go wrong and yet seem fine. The only real way to test is to see if the .cab has the same filesize as well as the contents extract out ok.

It installed fine on my earlier PC a few months ago, they were identical the only difference being the mobo.

Reloader:
First thing to do, and probably the easiest and cheapest way of diagnosing errors is to test out your CAB files. As I've said a number of things could go wrong, a scratch on the CD might also prevent a CD that was working in the past from working now. Copy the source cab file to a temp directory of your computer and to test out the cab file. |
