missing or corrupted file: window xp doesn't start
hey
my computer is not booting into xp because it said "the following files is missing or corrupt :C:\Windows\system32\config\system" so i searched around and i followed what they said here http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper..._20858623.html when i am in the repair console, i am able to get into cd c:\windows\system32\config but when i type dir system it says its not there. so i followed what it says and tried to copy c:\windows\repair\system, but it also says that file is not there. anyone know how i can fix this? |

Hmmmm, have you got the XP CD? Have you tried booting from it?

yes that's what i did already. its just when i'm in the repair console area and i follow the directions, it says the file is invalid or missing. i looked around more also and i also tried the microsoft, which was pretty much the same thing as the other one, but it's still not working.

Don't use the repair console. select the new installaition when it offers the repair console. When it sees a system already installed, you will be offered another repair option. Pick that one. You'll have to update the system after the repair from Windows Update.

oh kay i will try that...i'll let you know if it went through, thanks!!
oh kay, i have a question first though. when i go through the setup, how far does it take me till i can go into the repair console? because i got to a partition part and when i chose the partition that already had windows on it, it told me another operating system is installed there and it asked me if i was sure i wanted to install. i just wanna be careful so that i won't reinstall windows and lose my files, that's why i'm asking. hehe Last edited by jibby06; 07-22-2004 at 10:37 PM. |

Hey
I went through and I was never asked for another repair option, but it did tell me that there already is an operating system installed. So what should I do? |

I would get a floppy disk, USB Memory Stick, or any other forum of media that is accessible by your computer, put the needed file on it (I can get it for you if need), go into the recovery councle and through DOS/NT commands copy the file off of your media into its proper location on your HDD.

I think I fixed it. The problem I think was that the file "system" was not even in the repair folder either. So i got that file, put it on a floppy and copied it into the right spot, just like zac says. It's running check disk now, so I'm guessing it's working right now. Thanks guys.
