CD-ROM Drive goes to PIO mode from DMA!?

This has happened to me a couple of times in the past.

I inserted a CD-RW data disk in my drive not knowing it was no longer readable. After waiting for a few minutes to view the contents, I just gave up and ejected the bad disk.

When I tried to play an audio CD later, I got pops and clicks all over. Not knowing what caused the problem, I did a system restore and got back the use of my CD-ROM.

When this happened again with another defective CD-RW data disk, I went to Device Manager and noticed that trying to access a defective disk changed my CD-ROM drive from DMA mode to PIO mode thus causing the clicks and pops.

How do I revert back to DMA mode without doing a system restore. There is no DMA option in the drop-down box for this CD drive when it was previously in DMA mode.

THanks,

Vic

Thanks. I'll remember that if it happens again.

Would you know what causes the switch to PIO mode?

Regards,

My second HD is on the same secondary IDE channel as my CD-Rom drive. Is it still OK to delete this channel. (I should "delete" and not just "disable" the channel)?
