I have a small home network consisting of two desktops running Windows XP Professional Edition, as well as two laptops, one running XP Pro, and the other running XP Home. I recently learned about Offline Folders, and was interested in having my Laptop (the one running XP Home) having it’s My Documents updated whenever on the network. I started by installing Windows XP Pro on-top of the Home architecture and stumbled into some problems. At first it appeared that I needed to reinstall the default drivers that came with my laptop, such as the video driver, for the resolution was only in 16-bit color. When I later went to install the drivers the LCD screen would only appear black. I was wondering what could have possibly lead to this problem, and if its even possible to install Pro on-top of Home. Secondly, sense then I wiped my HDD, reinstalled XP Pro from scratch, and I recently noticed that the hibernation option under the Shutdown menu was missing. For those of you that use laptops know how important it is to be able to properly use this option for it saves critical battery life, and keeps the computer from over heating with its small fans in times of no use. I have previously installed this copy of XP Pro on other computers, and was able to use the hibernation option without any problems. I was wondering if someone out there knows of a possible way to re-attain my laptops ability to hibernate. I should also add that I have already tried installing the default video drivers, thinking that may be the problem, and I still haven’t fixed it. Thanks all for the help.

Have you enabled Hibernation? Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Hibernate tab and enable Hibernation.
Once you have done that, try going to the shutdown sequence (START > Shut down) while on the choice screen to standby, shutdown or restart press the left shift button down, and you should see the standby change to hibernate. Often times, your laptop will come with drivers to enable advanced power management support; install those. They will provide more functionality and interaction. (What laptop is it?) |

- I can't believe that I totally forgot about the power management settings! Wow, that makes me look like such a n00b.
Thanks for the help. My laptop is a Dell Latitude X200, that came standard with Windows Home Edition. - On a second note, you wouldn't happen to have an answer to why my computer seemed to have problems installing XP Pro over Home would you? - Thirdly one of my desktops does not have the hibernation tab that you talked about under Power Options. I was wondering if the fact that I have an integrated graphics card would have anything to do with the inability to hibernate of if the problem lies else where? Other than that, if you are using a standard VGA driver as your display device driver hibernate will not be available. Remember that hibernate settings depend on whether your computer and devices conform to appropriate ACPI standards. |

Ok, I looked under power management and I was unable to find the hibernation tab on my laptop. Do you know where I could get the drivers to fix this problem?
