how do i wake up my sleeping computer

hi i have a gateway laptop... im running windows xp... when i leave the computer in standby for a long time or i have the moniter off for a long time or even if i just have the screen saver on for a long time when i move the mouse or hit buttons i cant leave the black screen... i have to turn the computer off then turn it on... am i missing something? how do i get back on my computer without having to turn it off then turn it on... thanks in advance

Don't think it's a problem with your software. More likely something with the hardware. I just had an older Compaq running 2000 Pro with a similar problem. Had to remove the battery in order to shut it down from a standby situation before I could even get the power button to work. The problem was a bios glitch that had a standby timer running in conflict with the OS's standby timer. Only way to correct it was to disable standby (select Never in Power settings). Have you contacted Gateway or searched their site for anyone else with the same problem? If you want to post your laptop's model number and specs, we can take a look at Gateway for you.

its a 400sd4 laptop... thanks panama red its greatly appreciated... i also think it has something to do in the bios... computer runs real good otherwise

We're a little off topic here. The Abit replaced an Asus A7N8X-E Dx when I needed more vcore and vdimm options. (needed more juice ) Great board, rock solid. So's the Asus. It's running my office system now.

its gotta be something in the bios... whenever my computer is in standby or at a screen saver for say an hour or more it goes into sleep mode its just black and i try to press buttons and move the mouse but nothing happens so i have to restart it... help
