Win 2003 server printer issue

I have a Win 2003 server that is the PDC. I try to instal a HP network printer on it. It installes fine & I set it to use an ip port 172.17.20.22 for network printing. I can not ping this printer after I insall it. What am I doing wrong?

is it connected directly to the computer or off of the router/a print server? i could be mistaken, but i think the only way to set up an ip for it is to have the latter. if it is connected via parallel, does printing work from the server. if so, try enabling sharing and see if your other comps can see it. just a caveat, i know nothing about server 2003, just telling you how i would do it.
