shell.dll cannot be found

i have just spent the last day and a half removing almost 1000 viruses from a friends computer. everything has been running fine (a lot better, actually) except for when i tried to install avg i got an error saying:

Shell.dll cannot be found.

so i did a little bit of searching and found that this file needs to be in c:\windows\system32\ and i could copy it from c:\windows\system\. i did that, and avg installed without any issues, but when i rebooted the computer, i found that the file was no longer there.

can anyone help me as to why this file is not there and how to get it back permanently. thanks. using xp pro

read this page. download his cwshreader program and run it.
then download a good copy of the shell.dll file.
he has instructions there for you.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html
notice that shell.dll is a file you can download.
scroll down and notice there is a file (zip) for XP.
good luck

Have you tried running System File Checker, it has to be run from the command prompt, and you need either the XP disk or if the installation files are on the computer point to that.

( Microsoft kept SFC with XP, hopefully)

from the command prompt type

"sfc/scannow" without quotes, to start System File Checker

i had not tried that, but i will now. i had tried doing a repair install, which my understanding of that was that it replaced system files. no luck there, problem still going on. i will try sfc as soon as i get off work this afternoon
