Yep, tread with an air of caution when it comes to big M$ beta releases...

For things like that is why god invented Norton Ghost and commanded eveyone to backup their system first.

That's quite a headache. I'm just waiting for the final release, whenever that may be. Supposedly in early August.

Is that referring to the beta only? Or SP2 in general, including the final version, because if so than I will be very weary of installing it. BTW will SP2 be installed though windows updates?

SP2 is installed through Windows update (the final release). Obviously MS knows about the problem, so I would suspect that they would fix it for the final release...(then again we are talking about MS here).

Just another thing that will delay them.

Hope it'll come soon though - just installed SP1 on my laptop but waiting to see how MS will improve their WinXP Package. Longhorn is just off the horizon, with it's 64-bit badge stamped on it .

Speaking of Longhorn, there was a copy of it floating around the net a while ago.

Did anyone have a go at installing it ?? See what it was like ???

There was a leak, not an official release for the general public.

If you do a google search, there are a few places that did reviews on it.

I don't have any problems with SP 2 RC2 v2162 except it's a big of a pig (size). But my computer seems to run mo' betta, especially the scanner. Previously, the auto crop in my scanner program didn't work so good. Now it's a champ.

That's funny that SP2 would affect auto crop on a scanner...it seems like there are bigger problems out there that need fixed! LOL!

Well, now I know about the latest delay.
Microsoft wasn't really going to release this, were they ?

The initial installation was a bit of a pig. I deleted the contents of the C:\Windows\$Uninstall and C:\Windows\Service Pack\i386. It makes for a tiny installation. The Service Pack was just a backup of the stuff that was installed.

I tried the beta....it wouldn't install a stupid playlist due to some admin privledge crap, so I had to cancel install. Believe me, there were no other options. There was no uninstalling it, because it was half way installed. So I had a very screwed up computer when I rebooted.

Luckily, XP being very smart, recognized and installed drivers for EVERYTHING on my computer, like I had just built it. Took a few minutes, but then everything was back to normal. Phewf.... I am glad to wait for the final release.

A few other people were experiencing the same problem as me, and I tried a fix, but to no avail. Fired off an e-mail to MS, hopefully they fixed it.

I've been running SP2 since the beta came out, upgrading with each new beta release, and I've had no problems. I am aware that the early release conflicted with some virus checkers and firewalls but I would have thought those companies would have modified their software by now.

From the article:
"Microsoft's objective with Windows XP SP2 is to make it easier for end users to configure and manage security resources via new functionality and stronger security settings. Microsoft hopes the new settings will translate into safer Web browsing and improved security infrastructure for both businesses and individuals.

The smoke around the campfire, though, is that SP2 will wreak havoc on many security and firewall software utilities, forcing a redesign of antivirus suites, e-mail clients and firewalls. Test Center engineers installed SP2 on systems with utilities including Panda Software, Trend Micro, Symantec and Avast antivirus software, and all worked seamlessly. Symantec recently claimed that folks who download SP2 will need a Norton patch to co-exist with SP2. Yet Test Center engineers found that not be the case.

The functionality that SP2 brings to the table may make many third-party security utilities--such as popup blockers and software firewalls--obsolete. That functionality may push many security ISVs to rethink their marketing strategies."

Personally, I like SP2 RC2 and have had no problems.

Another good reason for Ghost (or sum such): A hosed upgrade.
