Are you on Cable or Dial-Up? Are you getting an error in Internet Explorer, somthing about a failed DNS attempt, or are you just plain not getting any internet?

An dyou just reinstalled 98, and it has since stopped working? Try going to the device manager to see if there is an explanation point next to the network device...

I haven't used 98 in a while...but right click on my computer>properties> there should be a tab that says device manager...then go to network devices, and any exclamation points should be there.

Not sure if this thread applies to what is going on with you, but it's worth a shot to look into

. . . if you have a router in between your cable modem & your Win98 computer, you shouldn't need any of the wizards. Just set IE to "automatically detect" under the "Connections" tab. . . and if that doesn't work, try powering the router off for a few minutes then powering it back up & see if you can then connect.
. . . why did you wipe the hard drive and reinstall? When you reinstalled, Win98 should have found your network card & bound TCP/IP to it. If during your reinstall, Win98 did NOT find your network card - you'll need to install the drivers. That is why Icallmedan was having you check in Device Manager. Make sure your network card (or onboard network) is listed and OK. . . . Gary [p.s. ... what firewall are you running?] Last edited by GaryRouth; 07-29-2004 at 03:09 AM. |
