I tried to install NERO 6.0 CD-RW software in WIN98SE. The install said it couldn't find CDROM.DLL on the install CD-ROM The file really was there, based on a full list of the directory. In DOS mode, I tried to run DIR and COPY on that file. Couldn't find it.
It looks like CDROM.* is a WIN98 reserved filename for the CD-ROM device. Is there a way to disable this reserved filename, so I can use the NERO software? NERO installed fine in WIN2000 at work. |

. . . from the ahead.de (Nero's software parent) website:
"5. Every time I try and install Nero, either from the CD or from a download over the internet, I get an error message that the CDROM.CFG file is missing or corrupted. How can I resolve this? The reason for your problem may be due to the fact that you are loading a CDROM driver in the CONFIG.SYS file that has the name of a device driver beginning with ‘CDROM’. You will find a line similar to the following in the C:\CONFIG.SYS file: DEVICE=C:\ Please rename CDROM to CDROM1, see example below DEVICE=C:\ Now open the file C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT with an editor. You will find a line similar to the following line: MSCDEX /D:CDROM Please rename CDROM to CDROM1 as well. Please restart your system. Now it should be possible to install Nero. " This is in the FAQs for Nero 6 installations. . . . Gary [. . . and Welcome to the PC Mechanic forums! . . . ] |

Thanks
Thanks. That was the clue I needed. Even with that much, it took me a while to find the information in the "Installation FAQ" on the Nero website.
