Xp help please

I was working on my friends computer trying to reformat his hard drive. I dont know what components that he has in it since he bought if from like compaq or dell. The problem is I get the comp to boot from the cd drive and it starts the windows install process. I get to the screen where it ask whether i want to install windows or fix it...so i hit install. I get to the next screen where it has the license agreement and it ask me to hit f8 to agree or esc to exit. So when i go to hit f8 nothing happens...esc works and the i can scoll the pages but it wont go past that screen if i press f8...any ideas please?
