Question Is it ME or my hard drive?

Problems galore.
First errors were MSN problems and I couldn't shut down the computer. Mostly the errors were:
-MSN6 has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL.
MSN said my OS was corrupt so we deleted the MSN core file and upgraded MSN. Then I couldn't run a virus scan with my symantec. So I went to their website and ran a virus scan. No virus. Good. I downloaded and ran ad-aware and spybot and they cleaned up a lot of junk. Computer ran good for a day or so, now it's crashing again, but only when I'm online. The errors are:
-Ddhelp has caused an error in GDI.EXE. Ddhelp will now close
-Fqctbig has caused an error in ISTBAR.DLL. Fqctbig will now close
-MSN has caused an error in UNICOWS.DLL. MSN will now close

Colleagues have given 3 different pieces of advice, and I'm not sure what to do:
1-Restore the machine and do the XP upgrade because ME stinks
2-buy a new computer because my hard drive is shot
3-do a system restore to before all this trouble started

Is ME really that unstable? Does any of this advice sound good?

ME is not all bad. I would try the system restore and see what happens.

What do you have too lose?

Thanks. I'm not sure. What do I have to lose? Will I lose documents, upgrades, added software, etc?

Sounds like your system was a bit infested, and now things are tangled up.

Fqctbig and ISTBAR are related to a "Downloader.Trojan: ISTBAR". Try to clean things up as best you can, even if as a last resort you have to slave the drive in another computer to really clean it. Absolutely make sure it's the slave if you try that method, or you'll have two infected and rather messed up machines.

But before having to go the slave route - you can try running the scans in Safe Mode [tap the F8 key while starting up, or hold down your Shift keys while starting up], and Disable System Restore before you scan. Your unwanted visitors have probably left copies of themselves in the restore folder: and if you run a restore without deleting them from there, they pay a return visit.

You might want to just clean out all the old restore points, and start fresh anyway.

Once the machine scans clean of spyware and viruses, you could try an over-the-top reinstall of WinME to avoid losing all your installed programs and data. Make sure to disable System Restore and your Bios AntiVirus while trying the reinstall. And make sure to disconnect the network, phone, scanner, camera, printer, etc. Details are in the Tips & Tricks thread http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846

Best of luck . . . and Welcome to the PC Mechanic forums

1. Yes, ME stinks, but upgrading a screwed up OS gives you - guess what? A screwed up upgrade. If you want to upgrade to XP, wipe the drive and start fresh.

2. Do you buy a new car because the ashtray is full?

3. If you have a good restore point from way back before any of this trouble started, that's your best shot.

Thank you good people. Now I have some options. I think I'll do the scan in safe mode first...it seems to be the easiest option.
