Question Operating System Question

I have a friend of mine that just bought a used Dell Laptop, PIII 500mhz processor, 16GB HD, 128MB, with Win XP installed. Can they legally sell her this computer without giving her the Operating System disks?

The question would be better: "Can she legally use the OS without a COA?”

Alot depends on who she got it from and what their agreement was. A new store bought copy of XP Home is a good $80 bucks.

It was a supposedly "legitimate" business, that installed XP Pro. Unfortunately she paid $600.

OUCHHHHHH. Did she get any cd's? Maybe there's a recovery cd with the OS on it. If she crashes real hard, she'll be out the price of a new XP cd.

Since it came from a business, they might have sold her one of their multi user licenses which makes it legal.

She called Microsoft, they checked the registration # from XP, and the business bought it as a business COA and he was not suppose to put it on multiple CDs, so Microsoft asked her the address of the business. She confronted the business and they "destroyed" their receipt and gave her a refund.

I was able to find her a Compaq laptop 766mhz, 10GB, 128MB in great condition for $150.00
