What's the speed of your processor and amount of your RAM? I'd think that may play a role.

Have you installed the latest video card drivers? I've noticed that this happens when I don't have the catalyst drivers installed on my system.

What are your specs? Are you running 2000 or XP?

I see two reasons for lagging. One is that although the minimum requirements for XP list 256MB of RAM, it just doesn't cut it. 512MB is the "real-world" minumum. You can either turn eye candy off or get at least another 256MB of RAM.
As for the second reason, you might have spyware lodged in your system. Run spybot and adaware to try to get rid of it. Most of the time, spyware is a major cause of slow downs. |

What's that mobo have for RAM banks? Do you have two or four slots? You can find more PC2700 for a cheap price to fill the available spots.

If you have only one stick of 256, you can get another to work with it for a nice price. If you have two 128s, that will make your expense a little more.
As FF said, turn off the fade effect if it's bugging you. Right-click your desktop, go to Properties / Apearance / Effects and uncheck the top box that says to use Fade manu transitions. |

ok i added another 256 to get 512 it still fades laggy, the fading is not bugging me but the fact that the fade is laggy bugs me any other ideas i also found out that it doesn't lag as much when my system isn't idle

Did the lag improve at all? Guessing here, but could onboard graphics be the culprit here? Maybe your display adapter isn't smooth enough for that kind of effect?

What are the specs on your video card? That could be affecting the way your menu's fade.

I know my self reading and writing to HD makes the fade laggy on my laptop (listed below with only 128mb of ram) but other then that it's smooth but I shut it off anyways

kevinf,
I believe it may be a combination of your video card and ram. That video card is pretty small and "under powered" for XP... |

what do u mean underpower i see other computers with 64 MB of video all over the place like in retail stores and they never have the problem and do u guys think that it could be the hard drive's problem since it access the hard drive slower

I dont think you could find the perfect answer of what is underpowered or whether your computer is adequately powered in using effects like fade etc. on a consistent basis. The important thing is to ask yourself how slow is the effect and whether you'd rather be spending money to rectify that problem if it is a HUGE annoyance or would you just turn it off. The things that could affect the performance of the fade effect and other such animations are the type and speed of RAM on your computer, the speed of RAM of your graphics card; the number of applications you have running etc. You could try specific actions, like clearing out the prefetch folder or checking to see that your drive isnt fragmented. From your description of the fade lagging more when idling, seems to be more of a latency issue of your RAM (system or grafix) than anything else.

Even though you have 64MB of graphics memory, onboard graphics just won't give you the same performance as a dedicated graphics card would.
