Command prompt
Usually when I always go to the command prompt box, it always showed C:\> as the prompt part. Now it shows C:\Documents and settings\my username>
How do I put it back to showing just C:\> ? EDIT: Ok, well, I can type PROMPT C:\ and hit Enter and it turns into C:\ , but then I exit and then go back to the command prompt interpreter and it goes back to showing C:\Documents and settings\my username> Huh? TIA...

Thanks very much for the link bigandy but, it didn't work. I don't know what else to do. Lol, please don't say I have to do a malware scan just incase something is manipulating my cmd.exe file.

Mine also says C:\Documents and settings\my username> I never use it though so I really dont care. I re-insalled windows just over a week ago, so I really dont think it's a bad thing that it says that and not just C:/>

Shouldn't there be a way to reassign the DOS environment variables to permanantly change the homepath? I was researching on how to do this this afternoon and didn't find anything out (sorry DBG). I figure this would be a fix to the above problem...maybe not.

if you want go get back to just c:/> at command prompt, just type cd\ and enter.

You can create a shortcut to CMD.exe
Edit and go to properties->change the "start in" line to C:\ |

I got the command prompt shortcut icon in my Start menu. EzyStvy, can you go through that little procedure again? I right clicked the icon, clicked Properties and went to Options. I then saw the "Start in" field and it has something in there, but I'm not too sure whether I should change it just in case.

Like EzyStvy suggested, "Start in" is the one you need. You can also change it wherever you start the command prompt, just right click on the icon, choose Properties and change the "Start In" setting to C:\
BTW I'm an old fogey of 30 and I vividly remember the DOS days when cd was all you had to navigate the directories on a hard drive Shame on you young kids
