Windows XP Problems
hi, i have been trying to sort out a friend's pc which they said to me to format windows XP home edition which wasn't successful so i put windows xp professional on top of that but windows xp home edition is still there and their cable modem doesn't work and the sound drivers are messed up saying there is no location for those drivers but they are working properly. Could i format their hard drives with a windows 98 startup disk and install windows 98 then put windows xp professional over the top of windows 98 as a upgrade and would everything work fine then?

Hello and welcome to PC Mech

What you need to do is a clean install. First back up all your data that you don't want to lose, then boot from the Windows XP CD. Setup will automatically start, then it will ask you if you want to repair the existing Windows. Choose no. After a couple of minutes you will be given a choice where to install Windows XP to. Choose the partition you want, then choose format (NTSC). That way the hard drive will be formatted and Windows XP Pro will be installed on clean hard drive. If the XP Pro is an upgrade setup will ask you to insert a previous version, like your Windows 98, just to confirm that you may legally use that upgrade. After that, Windows setup will continue. RJ

yes it would, just make sure you actually format the drive. i once installed XP over ME and it went pear shaped because FAT32 and NTFS are completely different. RJ isnt NTSC the american tv format? im sure theres pal + ntsc.
