Question Computer keeps restarting

Help!! Reinstalled windows XP (just because computer wasn't working ok and couldn't install some updates) and was in the process of downloading windows updates and asked to restart computer - I said yes and now is in an endless loop - it actually shuts off and on again. When I went to push power button, it didn't work had to use main power switch in back. Installed a new power supply - no change. I hooked it up to my other computer and ran norton (found 4 virus' - downloader.mscache). Will not start in safe mode.

Hmm...you could probably figure out how to get the system back up and running again, but when viruses are involved your only 'without a doubt' way of getting rid of them would be to backup and reformat.

Sounds like a Sasser or Blaster virus. Check Norton's website for removal tools. If you did a repair/install, the viruses may have still been residing in one of your personal files or program files.

You have to remove the system from the network though...as in unpluging the network cable otherwise the computer will keep restarting.

Can't even get to the repair install screen - disconnecting network cable did not do anything- just keeps looping through startup. Any other suggestions - could it be the processor?

Thanks for your help. We scanned it with Norton and quarantined the viruses (only one could be fixed) but when we put it back in our other computer still got the same problem. Any thing else???

Try booting from the XP cd and do a Repair/Install. When you get the first option to Repair with the Recovery Console, select New Installation instead. When the XP operating system is found, you will be given an option to format and reinstall or do a repair. Select the repair. Once the repair is completed, check your Device Manager. Correct any driver problems there before you do any updates to the XP. When you are doing the Windows Updates, temporarily shut down your antivirus program to prevent possible corruption of the update. Do the updates one at a time. That way if the lock up occurs again, at least you'll know which update is causing it.

XP doesn't require boot disks. Set the bios to boot from the CD drive as first boot device, put the XP CD in the CD drive, exit the bios saving changes. It should boot from the XP CD. Assuming you are using a legal copy of XP........

Don't use the Recovery Console. That's the first repair option I described above. Select "new installation" when you are offered the Recovery Console. Then it will find the existing XP install and offer a second repair option. Do that one.
