Talking This idea have any merit?

Long story was having odd driver crashes according to XP, saw several people say it was probably heat. So on a whim took off side of computer and watched in mild amusement as my case fans shut off, then turned on for a little bit then went off for a few mins and WHAM my nice driver message crash. Anyway in these crashes (one of them) nuked some settings in XP and I think I really should format the drive and reinstall xp. However I was wondering if I could install a new hard drive, make the current a slave, slavage the data I need and then format the old drive? I reinserted the fans in the power connector and they haven't shut off yet so hoping its fixed haven't had a crash for about a week. Any suggestions and direction accepted.

I have an XP disk I have heard the repairs usually don't work. Also I am concerned because one of the things the computer "forgot" was that I updated my virus definitions. Does that mean something important got destroyed?

If everything seems to be running ok now that the fan connection has been corrected, why not just do a repair with XP? Do you have a real copy of XP and not a restore disk?
