AVG and XP

Well my friend has a virus, and of course he doesn't have an antivirus, because that would be idiotic

Now he want to install AVG, but it won't let him for a reason like its missing the SHELL.DLL file... now I know that there is a dll-files.com or something like that, with a shell.dll download, but I searched my computer(XP) and found 2 shell.dll's in different places, and 1 SHELL.DLL in yet another place...

Any idea's on how to fix AVG to install without me downloading the shell.dll.

Try removing AVG from the system first. Then download it to another machine and use a jump drive (flash drive, etc) to transfer/reinstall to the first machine. Or you can burn it to a CD. I'm betting the download was corrupted, not the install.

He doesn't have it installed so removal is a no go, and he downloaded the new version off of the website and it failed to work, giving that error. Then I send him a different version through MSN and that failed to work as well for the same reason.

yea, it was sfc that helped the problem. for some reason, shell.dll had been removed, and by using SFC it replaced it. i tried just copying the file back, but it didn't seem to want to stay. once i used SFC my problem was fixed
