when i put the cd in windows asks me "if i want to up grade"?
if i do will the files on the HDD be erased?is it a total wipe and fresh install?

Yes ,like Ed says it just upgrades the needed files. I've done it to more than one machine without any problems or data loss.

Yes it only upgrades the parts of Win 98 that need it without affecting any personal settings or software or hardware installations. It should make your system much more secure and stable. Remember to use Windows update afterwards for some critical updates you may need. As with any change you make to your system it always involves some risk but I have upgraded all my machines to Win98SE without a single problem or loss.

I copied this from another thread , HAL 9000 posted it:

"Boot from the Win98 CD with CD support. Change to your C:\WINDOWS directory and either rename WIN.COM or delete it. Switch to your CD drive and run the setup. When prompted for an installation directory, be sure to rename it back to C:\WINDOWS from the defaulted C:\WINDOWS.000. Failing to do so will result in a clean installation, not an upgrade. If you make that mistake, it is reversible."

OK i've tried the info in HAL's post(link above) but i'm not to clued up on DOS prompts and am not having much success.also read this
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=76128

Can someone post a step by step, if it's not to much trouble(HAL help!!).
And i need it to be an upgrade not a fresh install, because i have files and docs i cant copy and need to keep on the HD.
This is a legal copy of win98se i'm using.

Here's a guide with most of the details (post again if you have questions). The procedure for an "over-the-top" upgrade is the same as for an "over-the-top" reinstall:

Over-the-Top Reinstall of Win9x/Me

Thanks gary and everyone,Gary what you suggested worked and even better it solved the main issue, which was to get a modern modem driver recognised.
