they look like a bunch of ASCII symbols. anybody know how to fix this?

What printer model? What OS? What kind of connection?
It's almost certainly a printer driver issue. Make sure you download the latest printer driver from the manufacturer's website. |

I have also seen this linked to Virus. Make sure to do a update and full scan on your system.

As for the possible virus cause, IIRC that was one that opened NetBIOS shares, but didn't filter out shared printers/faxes etc and thus tried to copy itself unto a printer, result : quite a few pages with ascii symbols. I don't think that's the case here. I'd go with the driver problem too..
