Another freebie CD from Microsoft: WinXP SP2
Quote:
Much like the February 2004 Updates CD, Microsoft is offering the Windows XP SP2 CD shipped to you for free. I suppose this is more for users who do not have high speed internet access. Get 'em if you want 'em! |

Hey, thanks for the heads-up oddjob. That's definitely for me. I don't know how big SP2 is, but it'd be an overnight download for me at the very least.
The link's not working tho, where on the site do I need to navigate to find the offer?

From what I hear, you'll be able to order the cd once the download is available. The option to get the cd will be at the windows update site.

Sorry gang, don't know what happened but it was working this morning when I posted it. I would have ordered it myself, but I have highspeed and can download it in minutes.

i have av, popup blocker, spyware etc. already. think i'll pass on SP2 at least for a whille, sounds like it will have a lot of stuff updated that i dont have or use. i hate those shotgun updates, it always puts extra things like outhouse express on my computer which i dont want.

Thanks oddjob for the link. I remember reading that SP2 is about 80Megs so if you have dialup it will take about a week ( just kidding but close ) to download.
EDIT: Actually according to THIS I misread another article a few weeks ago about the size of the update. But even with DSL I am still going to order the CD. |

I have heard from multiple sources that SP2 will be around 80 megabytes, and could be around 100 at most.

People have been downloading beta versions of SP 2. I'm running SP2 RC2 v2162. I think the official version is v2180. The registered beta testers may already have first crack at the official SP 2 release.
As far as I can see, it's stable as all. I haven't had any problems with a good install. I highly recommend that people ghost their drive before installing. Things can go wrong. I like it.

I just reloaded XP on my laptop. Does the SP2 disc contain all of the SP1 updates to bring me up to current? Or will I need to dial-up download those first before loading the SP2 CD?

SP2 includes SP1 as well, so it doesn't matter whether you update the Original Windows XP, or the Windows XP SP1/1a.

Thanks for the posts, everyone. I just ordered mine. I am on dialup and the best I can do is 24.6. Usually it's 24.0.

That's good to hear, RJ. I'm in the same boat as Carl. D'loading the SP1a updates I'm needing would take several overnighters, and that's only if they come through without problems.
Is everyone pretty much accepting that SP2 is safe and in working order at this point? I don't like being a guinea pig... |

CarlSyou have my undying sympathy. My dial-up is usually around 46.6bps. So when I heard about how big that new upgrade for WinXP is I knew I could never download that. I do occasionally need to use my telephone. thorlo6

Hey Kov, they don't usually put out an update CD until most of the bugs are worked out. That's why they put out beta versions first. THEY are for the guinea pigs!oink!oink!

Thanks - just ordered it. It said 4~6 weeks though...a bit late, won't you say? But if it's free and it's coming from MS, I'd take 4 weeks.

i ordered the free disk on 8-26 and it arrived 8-30 thats pretty quick service. i checked and it was going to take according to the update site over 3hrs which means prob. 4 to 5 hrs usually to down load on dial up. haven't installed yet thought i would hold off a few weeks just to hear a few more comments and possible fixes.
