WinXP Instant Messenger

I have a problem with WinXP Instant Messenger automatically and constantly signing me off even when I'm in the middle of a conversation. Sometimes I can stay signed on for a few minutes, other times only a few seconds. I didn't have this problem until recently when I loaded Norman AV and Web Root SpySweeper. I have checked the settings of these programs, but don't see anything that might interefere with or cut off this IM service. I have gone to the programs' respective web sites, but could find no mention of this issue. And I have gone to the MS web site to look for a patch for their IM program, but found nothing. I am on a three PC wireless home network with a broadband connection via a cable modem. Could there be a conflict between my AV or SpySweeper, or do I have a corrupted version of the IM program (4.7)??? Thanks so much for any help you may provide!

Just for clarification, what IM client are you using? YIM? AIM? MSN?

Are you connected to a router (with multipe computers on it)?

Norman or Norton AV? What version?

windows messenger isnt brilliant with regards to stability, its better to use msn messenger messenger.msn.com - you can still use you passport to login with aswell. this still could be a router and firewall config issue like force flow said also.

The questions you asked are answered in my original post.

I don't wish to switch to another instant messenger program. I want the one I have to work properly.

Any takers?

I wasn't suggesting a switch. I was asking questions so I could better understand your situation, and thus help find a solution.

Hi Force Flow--

I am using Windows Messenger (4.7). As I stated in my original post, I am on a three PC wireless network. I am using NORMAN (not Norton) AV 5.7. What else do you need to know?

What the forum members are trying to impart to you is that Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are two separate but very similar animals. Personally, I KNOW you would be more pleased with MSN Messenger's performance, but, be that as it may, if you insist on Windows Messenger have you tried disabling AV software and preventing the Spyware proggie from starting up to evaluate weather or not the Windows Messenger application works as it used to for you without these programs running?

Hi, AlwaysUp--

Yes, that was one of the first things I did. I disabled both my Norman AV and the Web Root SpySweeper because the problem seemed to arise shortly after I installed both of these programs. (And I had added both within a couple of weeks of each other.) Question: If indeed our wireless router is somehow interfering with the Windows Messenger program, is there anything that can be done to fix the problem? Might the router's driver or firmware need to be updated? We are using a Linksys 802.11b wireless router. Thanks!

Does your router indicate the strength of your connections? Could you just be dipping below minimum signal strength and temporarily loosing internet? For the firmware question, I would go to the Linksys support site and look up your model and see what the current firmware version is and what issue the upgrade to new firmware accomplishes.

Yes, the router indicates connection strength, which is usually very good or excellent. So I don't think it's a signal strength problem. As you suggested, I went to the Linksys web site in search of a firmware upgrade. One is available, but the release notes make no mention of a fix for any issues involving Windows Messenger, which makes me doubt whether downloading the upgrade would be beneficial. Any other thoughts?
