XP activation Question

In my household, we have a Dell that came with WIndows XP Home. Later on, we went to Professional. Can I activate the XP Home that is not being used on my computer?

Why do you want to activate something that you don't use

Anyway, you can activate any Windows XP that you legally own.

Well, I will install it, obviously. If you don't activate it within 30 days, it will stop working!

But How many times can I activate it per copy?? My bro has a compy of XP Pro on his laptop that he got form Dell? How many active copies can I have at a time??

A lot depends on whether you have an actual XP disk or a Dell restore disk. A restore disk will only work on that Dell machine. Legally, if the XP is OEM it is to be used only on the Dell that has a sticker with the product key on the case. As long as you only have it on one computer I don't think MS will give you a hard time. You will have to activate it by phone.

Could put the dell copy back on the dell and install the pro on the new rig, you would have to reactivate the new copy, not the dell copy i don't imagine. Anyway, as the others said, if you legally own the license for two copies, you're all set.
