I built a new computer, but using some old parts from another computer. My new build has a Gigabyte Motherboard GA-8IPE1000 Pro-G, New 2.8C Intel processor, 1 Gig Geil Golden Dragon 400 DDR Memory, An older Western Digital 100 Gig HDD and an older floppy, an older CDR and DVDR drives. I've gone into BIOS and stuff appears okay in there. I reformatted the hard drive and then attempted to install Windows XP Pro and it does good untill it gets to loading files and then stops on driver.cab. What could be the reason it stops there? Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks

Could be a bad CD. Have you tried cleaning it? Do you have access to another CD for now?

Did you let the windows disc do the formatt? I have an old Dell 4100 with P4 1.0. I downloaded and created a 98SE boot disk and fdisked the old dell drive (it's a WD 20GB). Put in the Windows disc and it formatted and loaded windows no problem. Course, it's only good for thirty days cause I have it loaded on my main PC and can't activate it. I just wanted to see if I could do it. When I built my PC I loaded windows that time without a hitch. Later I tried to do a clean install agian and had problems of it starting to load windows and stalling in the middle of the process. I gave up and took it to a friend that said I had (somehow) made multiple partitions and was probably tryuing to load windows on one that was too small. He deleted all the partitions and let the disk formatt and load windows. With the 98 boot disk you'll have to delete the partition that windows created and let it reformatt and load. I don't know for sure. I'm no guru as anyone reading this can tell. Good luck.

Fellows, I tried a version of Windows XP and a brand new version of Windows XP Pro. It stopped at the same place on both. Also After booting up through the BIOS, It said something about NTLDR is missing. Does anyone know what that is and how I can get it? I think that I will run some memory test on my Memory today and see if that could be the problem. Thanks for the quick answers.

NTLDR is part of the boot process, it checks the BOOT.INI file on which OS is to be loaded.

I had "NTLDR is missing" on one of the laptops that I was going to buy; could not figure out what was causing it. Let me know what you did to fix the problem.
You should always remember to only setup Windows with the minimum hardware. No PCI cards, only 1 stick of RAM, etc |

Guys, I have successfully install Windows XP Pro on that Western Digital 100 Gig. HDD and let me tell you what may have fixed it. First I tried the reformat the HDD and tried to install Windows XP Pro again, but it failed again. So then I did two things, One I tried a New IDE cable and I also did the Long format, instead of the Quick. One of those things fixed it. Thanks so much for your help and quick responses. This is the greatest sites on the internet.

Great to see you that you got it working.
I don't think it would matter if it was a quick format or a long format; I think it's more of that you used a new cable. |

If it's a brand new blank hard drive, you can't use the Quick format option. The quick format option only works on a hard drive that has already be formatted in the normal fashion.
