Pavilion Laptop reinstalled with OEM CD

I just reinstalled XP Home with the OEM XP Home SP1a Cd and it did not ask for the product key during installation. I am wondering if I should go in and give it the CD Key that is on the bottom of the laptop or is it ok to not do that step?
Registration optional and I did not choose to register. What am I supposed to do legally?

It will ask if it needs to be activated , possibly what you did was more of a repair and it already had the key from the initial installation

no, actually it was a fresh install.
was fat32
formatted NT quick
installed.
the screen about registration says registration optional.
i put the dot in the circle that says i didn't want to register at this time.
this has nothing to do with activiation.
as i recall from other installs this will probably not ask me to activate.
so...
should i edit the cd key in the registry or not?

If it ain't broke don't fix it

if it's working fine I'd just leave it alone
