win xp boot issue
This is an odd one, I've not heard of it happenning to anyone but me and only on this computer so far.
What happens is when I boot up the windows splash screen appears telling me it's loading. After that it just blank, no activity on the hdd led. Thus I press the reset and it loads, gives me the boot menu option. I choose "load windows normally" and al is fine and dandy. So why would it do this and how can I fix it? Post your system specs and the version of Windows you're using. Also let us know what kind of background programs you're using (anti-virus, firewall, etc...).
Have you tried just booting up into Safe Mode? Cricket

specs
I thought I mentioned it was win xp (pro). currently no service packs, but had the issue at an earlier install of win xp pro with sp1 as well. I plan on installing sp2 in a week or two.
As for the rest of my specs. I've a fic at31 fusion m/b, amd athlon xp 1800, 512mb pc2100 ram, SONY DVD RW DRU-530A, PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-114, inboard VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM), onboard Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC, U.S. Robotics 802.11g Wireless Turbo Adapter, onboard ati at31 32mb graphics, two 120gb hdd (wd and maxtor), a 3.5in floppy. As for background apps. just norton anti-virus, US robotics wireless connect utilty, norton ghost, hp printer tools, and timex data link, and the ussual windows processes I believe. Not that these are likely causes, I seem to think the incidents have occured prior to their install. I maybe wrong though. I can get into safe mode, but it doesn;t solve the prob. and the problem doesn't occur everytime I boot, just sporatically. Somebodyelse101 |

Try replacing the IDE cable to the hard drives.
Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download the diagnostic utility and test the hard drives. What brand and wattage power supply are you using? Cricket

done the tests before
I've tested the hard drives before and come up with no errors. As for the cables they are new, came with the m/b. I believe my powersupply is a 400w Antec. Came with my case a Antec Performance II series SX1000II.

Even if the cables are new, doesn't mean they work very good..you should really try what Cricket suggested.
