Whats better about 98SE than win98?

Would it be worth my time (and money) to upgrade to win98se from a standard win98? I wouldnt need the upgrade, just a win98se disk. I am running XP pro as well, so its not going to be my main operating system. I only use it for a few old games and programs that wont run on XP. I probably wont use it much once I upgrade my memory to an acceptable amount of ram.

Also, I dont know if its my mobo, or what, but win98 crashes way too often. I have reinstalled win98 3 times in the past 2 months. Xp works fine, but simply looking at win98 wrong seems to make it crash.

If you're only going to run a few old games on it, don't bother upgrading it. I think one of the main features that you get with SE was internet connection sharing and better USB support.

You're seeing one of the biggest differences between Win9x and WinXP...stability. The reason Win9x crashes more is because the main OS kernel in Win9x handles the OS and applications. In WinXP, there are two separate kernels...one that handles the OS and another that handles everything else. So in Win9x, it a program is glitchy and unstable, it'll take down the OS when it messes up. With WinXP, if a program is glitchy it'll only cause itself to close down while WinXP will remain running nicely.

Is it usually the same games that crash 98? Sometimes you can fix some problems with individual patches available at the game's website. Or try a different version of Direct X and/or a different version of your video driver.

You can also give the games another try in XP by trying installing them using the Compatibility Wizard [right-click the setup executable and choose Compatibility (or wording like that - I don't have XP with me at the moment)]

Hi Gary,

Haven't been to Maui in awhile, but I'm sure they'll have a good time..it's a beautiful island. I think the weather there now isn't too bad. We just had a storm here the other day and it's been very humid for the past few days...but I'm on Oahu and Maui tends to be much drier. How come you didn't go?

Win98 SE has some patches that may help your crashing situation. You can dload them all at windows Update.

Its not the games that crash 98, more or less it's drivers or programs. I just installed some (or a lot ) of new parts, so I'm giving it another go. This time around its a little more tricky though. I cant get my raid card or my Audigy 2 zs to work with 98, they both say they require 98se On top of that, the mobo drivers dont like 98 at all. I dont know what I should do. I will try that compatability wizard here when I get xp going.

If that's the case, go ahead and upgrade from 98 to 98SE. It's relatively painless.
