win2k installation

I am trying to install win2k on a new HDD. The drive has been formatted to FAT32 and it is set up with 1 partition (100%). I tried installing from the cd and it loads the first files, reboots, then starts back at the beginning. I can't get it to finish installation.

Next, I tried to install using dos commands from a floppy. I can see drive C when I check partitions through FDISK, but when I try to switch to drive C or format drive C I get an "invalid drive specification" error.

Any ideas to get windows installed?

Did you make sure to take out the WIN2K CD before it reboots? You have to do that or else you will boot back into setup.

Yes I did. I'll give it another try though. Previously I would take out the CD, reboot, and then it would give me a boot failure message. I'll post results after this attempt.

I insert the CD, some files are loaded, and then the system reboots. I make sure to have the CD out before the system boots back up. I runs through POST (which is very slow) and then says "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" I put the disk back in and the process starts over.

I had a problem last year like you describe. Sounds dumb and I am sure you checked but I had one thumb print on my disc.

I have set up the HDD as the first boot drive and also tried with it being the only boot drive with no luck. I made sure the CD is clean. Any other ideas? I have tried loading this OS probably 50 times trying different combinations and am unable to get it on there. I don't have any floppies and I'd like to get it working using the CD.

**Edit** Even when I have the HDD as the only boot device after the POST it says "BOOT FROM CD" and then wants the boot disk inserted.

Do as Andy said. Also you can do a low level format w/diag program from the manufacture and start over with your install.

When I boot, windows lets me format and partition. I've just been using the entire HDD as one partition formatted to NTFS. I've also formatted the HDD using a windows ME boot disk and tried FAT32. Windows will still not go past the initial loading phase.

I guess I will use Western Digital's disk to write all zeros to the drive, attempt formatting, then start over again. Does anyone have any recommendations?

If anyone has an idiot of the year award I'll take two. I finally found that I had left the jumper on the HDD in the master position. I took it off and windows fired right up. Stupidity can be so frustrating.

Why are you prepartitioning and formatting the drive (and why are you using FAT32)? Just let Win2K setup do that for you, I install 2K on totally blank drives right out of the box all the time, and I always use NTFS.

Technically I misused the term partition. I am actually not partitioning and using the entire drive as a whole. I was only trying the FAT32 format since I really had no idea what was the problem. After realizing that I had the HDD jumpered to master (with no other drive as a slave) I let windows install itself (using NTFS) and encountered no problems. Just a small oversight on my part that caused me 3 days of frustration.

glc, how do you get the boot files onto the HD. Do you set the BIOS to boot from CD and use the W2K CD or use a floppy. If using a floppy, which is the best one to use for a new W2K install?
