I'm not sure what you mean by remove.
Did you delete the drives in Device Manager?

You seem to have badly confused XP.
Did you set a restore point before you switched out the drives or is there a restore point close to that time ?
If so, delete all the current cd drives, shutdown , put the old drive back in, start up in safe mode and when it ask if you want to use system restore say yes.
Restore to the date when the old drive was in.
If that works go into Device Manager and delete the old drive, shutdown, install the new drive.
When it restarts XP should recognize the new drive and not have any phantom drives listed.
