explorer.exe won't start

working on a friends computer, and when i login, i get to his desktop wallpaper, but explorer.exe won't run to finish getting to the taskbar and what not. if i hit ctrl-alt-del, explorer isn't running. if i hit new task and run explorer, everything is fine, and it will boot in. does anyone know how to get it so it will run automatically? thanks. running windows xp with a dell dimension 4300 computer

try this
1. Go to "Start" > "Run" > Write "regedit" and press on "Enter" button.

2. Open:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

And verify that "Shell" value contain this infomration:

"Shell"="explorer.exe"

3. Reboot the computer.
