upgrade from 98se to XP

I'm going to replace a 98se computer with a new one using windows XP. I would like to transfer some programs from the old computer to the new one, so my question is if I'm going to transfer, then should I choose NTFS or Fat 32? If I'm not going to transfer which one? Thanks for the help.

Use NTFS either way. It's more secure and XP will read the 98, FAT32 files just fine. Easy way to do it is get the Xp machine all set up, then install the 98 hard drive as a slave and just copy/paste your files to whatever location you chose. If you were going the other way, FAT32 will not "see" NTFS files.

I would definetly use NTFS. It's more secure and just plain better. Use the XP file & settings wizard if you want and it should be no problem.

If you are going to transfer PROGRAMS (that is, Applications), you are going to have to reinstall them. I haven't found FAT 32/NTFS to be of any issue. Either Win 98 applications work with XP or they don't. XP also has a W98 emulator. How good it works, I don't know.

RayH, I have an old program that I use daily that was designed for Win95 and it works perfectly. XP is very adaptable. Not to say that there are'nt programs that won't work, I just haven't found them.

Do you mean to say that if we use NTFS,then we can have both winxp and win98 in our computer system(dual booting)?

Also i want to know that how can we replace winxp with win98 on same computer?

windows xp can read and wright to fat fat32 and ntfs windows 98 only sees fat and fat32 so you wood have to have at least one fat32 partition to install win98 to.
the win98 emulater is a way to make older programs think that thay are on a win98 or 95 computer right click a program shortcut select properties then compatability and pick a operating system from the list hit apply
