Win98 se Cabs
What is the best method to put the CAB files on a computer running Win98 se. I am tired of running to the disk cabinet for the OS CD! Please be specific. THX

The easiest way in my opinion is to insert the CD into the machine and copy the WIN98 folder to the root of the drive. The next time it asks for a cd just point it to the folder. There is also a registry entry you could modify to make it point to the WIN98 folder.

My habit is to create a C:\Windows\Cabs folder. Copy the contents of the CD's WIN98 folder into it.
Next run REGEDIT. Go to..... HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup Look for the SourcePath key. Right click on it and choose Modify. Change it to "C:\Windows\Cabs" (no quotes) Click OK |

I prefer to keep it out of the \windows folder. I do what Edrod does, but I don't dump the subfolders (ols, tour) in there, that's just wasted space.

Mine is pretty much like elrod's and glc's except in a directory w98sein that has the 4 files from the root of the CD and a win98 sub under that with only the files from that directory.
This parallels the operation of the CD. It is overkill, but that is the way I have all my install files stored. Pop the CD and xcopy the directory onto the hard drive. |

The 4 files from the root aren't necessary either. I do complete installs from just the files in the \win98 sub, there *is* a setup.exe in there too.

They are the file cabinets that hold all the programs and files that your installation will need. The stuff is stored that way to save space.

Okay cool. How come there is a Cabs folder in the C:\ of my Windows ME computer? It was put there automatically by Windows on installation I believe. Thanks in advance.

ME copies the cabs as part of the install. That's one reason why a fresh install of ME takes up so much space - and ME will never ask you for the CD when you are installing things.

How much space do the Cabs usually take up?

Depends on the version. 98 is around 120 megs, 98SE is about 140. This assumes you don't copy the subfolders, just all the files in the \win98 folder. No idea on ME but it's considerably more.

Glc, the C:\Cabs folder in my Windows ME machine is only 2.33mb strangely enough. But the Windows folder is 1.2gb, although there is no second Cabs folder within it. Could the Cabs be labled under something else or do I just not have Cabs on my machine (just curious - I've never really had to use them). Thanks in advance.

Search for *.cab and you should find them. There will be a whole bunch. I'd suspect c:\windows\options\cabs as a first place to look.
