I have been reading the threads about the release of SP2 and have seen several references to slipstreaming. Since I plan on doing some changes later this year and may reload XP I am interested in how it is done.
I did a search on slipstream going back 6 months but didn't get any hits explaning how to do it. Any instructions would be welcomed. Chas I run Nero 5.5 if that matters.

Make sure your Nero is 5.5.9.0 or better, and you will need IsoBuster.

You may want to also look into AutoStreamer. Looks easier then that other way... but I guess I kinda like to take the easy way out somtimes

It's fairly easy, even for a non-command line luddite like me. I'M NOT A GEEK is a bit easier to update the original CD files and SP2 download. He has a one step extract and update method.
Basically, you will work with three folders: 1) Folder 1: Copied original Windows XP CD files. 2) Folder 2: Downloaded SP 2 files 3) Folder 3: Extracted boot files from original Windows XP disk, using the free version of ISO BUSTER. Simple command from "Run" will simultaneously extract the SP2 files from Folder 2 and update Folder 1. Where C is the drive of the Folders. C:\Folder 2\sp2.exe -s:c\Folder 1\ You then burn the resulting Folder 1 with Nero, using Folder 3 for the source of the boot files. Windows-Help.Net is a bit clearer on how to use Nero for this. It's much simpler to use "RUN" than the command prompt window. Also, I suggest naming the folders: Folder 1, Folder 2, and Folder 3. The instructions have all the folders with some WinXP name. It'll get your head spinning!

I've seen several posts recently on slipstreaming SP2 into XP. All reference Nero 5.5.9.0 or newer. Is Nero the only burning software that will work on slipstreaming? I had v5.5.9.1 until recently, but was having problems burning music and gave it to a friend. It just doesn't seem logical that only Nero will work. Anyone know? I'm piggybacking this question since it seems to fit with this thread. Thanks.

You can use any burning software that can create a bootable CD, it's just that Nero is what most people use and therefore most tutorials show how to do it with Nero.

Thanks, RJ. I'll download SP2 and give slipstreaming a try this evening.

Check the link on XP SP1 slipstream to see how to set up Roxio 5. Last edited by RayH; 08-12-2004 at 02:26 PM. |

I'm thinking of updating my Dell OEM XP CD (with SP1a build into it). Does slipstreaming SP2 work on OEM CD's like that one?

Is it a real Windows XP CD or just some kind of recovery CD. If it's a real XP CD, it should work. Just try it. SP2 will give you an information if it's not possible.

Hey RJ, how do you define "real"? It's capable of fully installing XP on a clean hard drive if that's what you mean. I'll probably give it a try when I get the time and see what happens.

From what I've seen on the Dell forum, it will work.

Some OEM Windows disks seem to have problems. Maybe Dell doesn't. Dell seems to be more to the street OEM version than most.
I reinstalled a friend's laptop with an HP OEM WXP disk. It behaved more like a Devleoper's Edition. It required no Product Key or Activation. I would assume that the disk is slightly altered as not to work in anything but with an HP mobo. This would satisfy the Microsoft requirements of only one installation. |

Does slipstreaming work with pre-SP1 CDs?

Yes, because SP2 includes SP1 as well.

Here's a way to slipstream SP2 without the need for Nero or ISO buster.
Scroll down to Bootable Windows XP installation CD ROM http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/ |

Dell OEM XP CD's are real CD's, not restore discs. It's just keyed to only work with a Dell bios.
