I would try booting into safemode with networking enabled. Then run antivirus software if you have it. If not, go to trendmicro.com and run free utility to scan and clear your comp.
I guess I didn't read your post carefully. I guess a virus wouldn't be the issue here. Last edited by antgross@pacbell.net; 08-11-2004 at 06:21 PM. |

well, xp does have minimum system requiremens such as 64 megs of ram, an older system might now have that much, as with other requirements so i would check those out and make sure you meet those requirements or else you will have issues with stability

Trying going here. They have similar problem http://www.devhood.com/messages/mess...hread_id=75693
Perhaps your memory isn't seated properly? Did you take out and reinstall for any reason, eg.? |

You could try to do a Repair Install or whatever that option is on the XP CD. Maybe it's just a bad system file. If that fails you could always try a full new installation of XP, but then again that may be to time consuming for you. Hope you sort it out.
PS-I would only think it would be a problem with windows unless of course you recently did an upgrade of something inside, which could possibly lead to the RAM idea below. |

Do you guys reckon it could be the MoBo? cos i can get one quite cheap off ebay so if it is i dont mind
. I reckon it must be because i tested each RAM chip individuallys and it wouldnt start so what you guys think?

Just because it installed on the other machine fine doesn't necessarily mean it installed correctly on the older one. Stranger things have happened then just a bad installation I assume. And I don't see how your hardware would be of any problem if it worked one day and then you reinstall XP and then it doesn't work? Big coincidence there... Unless you fiddled around with the hardware and installed XP I wouldn't place blame on the hardware, but that's just me being optimistic maybe since a re-installation is much easier and cheaper then most hardware problems.
And replacing a bad mobo with a cheap one from e-bay is generally not a good idea, since if the mobo craps out then you don't really have much that you can do, apart from buying a whole new mobo. Speaking of that, I wouldn't stick it on the mobo as being problematic since I would expect a problem to show earlier, such as during the BIOS presentation, not once Windows is starting. Not sure on old mobo's but now they have beeping alerts that will point to things such as faulty RAM. What do you mean it didn't start? Like it didn't even boot to the point of showing the BIOS screen or Windows didn't boot? PS-Sorry if I am sounding kinda stubborn, but I just can't rationalize how Hardware would fail right after a new installation of XP. Just seems kinda iffy to me, so I am placing the blame on XP

I see what you mean about the XP thing but it wasn't running before i formatted, it did get further into the boot tho, it got to the login screen but now as soon as its finished at the bios and where xp should start loading it goes tits up. And yes i did fiddle witht he bios, i wiped it as i had a PW on there that i didnt set and i needed access to it.
