how do I get rid of a duel boot
I am running a duel boot computer with 2 hard drives and 2 operating systems. Win 98 is on my C drive and Win 2000 on the D drive. My win98 is no longer working, so I would like to format the drive and use it as storage. If I do this it will remove the boot.ini file. will this make my Win 2000 inaccessible on the D drive? can I do it without reinstalling win 2000.

In your Startup/Recovery Options (Win2k), set the startup to start Windows 2000, and then format your Win98 drive. You shouldn't have any problems.

IntegraGSR, are you sure? I thought that the MBR was on the C drive even if the actual OS was on another drive. If you delete the MBR from the C, will that not make the OS on D unuseable?

I'm not too sure, but if you install an OS on a hard drive, it creates a master boot record on that drive, regardless of which it is. So C and D have an MBR.
Just to test, physically remove drive C from your computer. If your D drive boots normally, then you can safely erase your C drive. |

I haven't done a dual boot in a long time, but i remember having to delete the line in BOOT.INI which dealt with the OS that i wanted to get rid of. I use XP, so i can just go to START > RUN and type msconfig to get to the boot.ini... if you see the information for your 98 installation, delete it so that you don't get that choice menu each time you start your computer.
You should be able to just format the disk that has your 98 installation on it. When the menu comes up to ask which OS you want to use, you just have to select the 2000 one. Sorry if my post was ambiguous |

Would this same procedure work if both 98 and 2K were on the same physical drive? 98 on the 1st partition of course.

tryed it
tried unplugging the hard drive with 98 on it , which is the C drive. Booted the computer, and got "NTLDR is missing" error. Looks like I need that boot ini. File on the C drive. Anybody got any other ideas?

Try doing a repair install of of the drive that has WIN2K on it when you have the 98 dirve unplugged.
