Why s lots of people avoiding the final ver of sp2 for xp. I hear only AMD 64 users are safe, and those using intel are not.

Programs that load code into memory and execute it are ones that blow up with SP2. Those programs will have to be re-written and that takes time. I saw a good article somewhere about how the DIVX player does this (both how it works with SP2 and how it blows up lol).

Lots of people are avoiding because they are scared because of the many bad things that have been written about incompatibility.
But that shouldn't bother you. SP2 is a good service pack, I have it, one of my friends have it, we both have Intel CPUs and it's working well except the firewire network but I'm not sure if SP2 is to blame for this. RJ

Actually, it is RJ.
There were two work arounds. One of which I think is as simple as reinstalling the drivers. |

What is interesting is that I am not yet able to get it. I am in the Twin Cities area of MN and I have yet to see SP2 as an update, a quick search of the MS site did not give me a copy to DL.
Yup - just ran win update again and no updates are available (and yes I am on good copy - retail full version)

SP2 will not be in the windows update until August 16. I have been running SP2 for two days and my machine runs great. I do not notice a performance loss of any kind so you just have to take a leap of faith when ever you are ready.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en That is the better choice anyway (and it is NOT only for IT specialists, and only for multiple machines. . that's just a bad expression by M$), as you only need to download it once, and not everytime you reinstall windows (no matter how often or seldom you do it). Once you have that package you can slipstream it into your Windows CD, and whenever you need to reinstall you will have a clean WinXP SP2 system, instead of installing a previous version and update to SP2 afterwards (which usually works well, too, but with slipstraming you don't leave any SP1 remnants whatsoever). Only disadvantage would be if you're on dialup. But PC magazines should include the SP2 on CD, too, so you could be able to get it that way soon. @DragonNOA1 Yes I've read about the slowdown of firewire 800, but that's not what I meant. I meant that the firewire network doesn't work anymore, using classic 400mbps firewire, see this thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=105893 The reason why I'm not sure if SP2 is to blame is that I found a thread in another forum about another guy having that problem, but the thread is 2 years old and he got that problem after installing SP1. After deinstalling SP1 his firewire network worked again. But me and my friend, we've used firewire network with WinXP SP1 very often. RJ |

I think SP2 is great.... I have not encountered any problems with it yet. I would recommend that everyone update.

Before the time where we didn't meet we met about 2 or 3 times where both of us had SP2 RC1, but I'm not sure if we established a firewire connetion. I believe we did, but I'm not sure, so I can't say for sure whether it worked with SP2 RC1 or not. But even with the original XP my friend does not get an IP displayed in the properties of firewire on his laptop. I think I mentioned that all in my thread, though. Tomorrow I want to do a clean install and see if it changes anything. RJ |

I just did a fresh install yesterday with SP2 slipstreamed. I along with my Office upgrade, it saved me about 900 MB. It's running really well.
With WXP SP2, my Roxio 5 doesn't tally the file sizes very well, either for Data or Music. But it's an old program anyway. I'm using Nero 6 now, so it doesn't matter.
