Can I safely delete a CONFIG.BAK file?

I found a file called CONFIG.BAK in my C: drive at C:\CONFIG.BAK. I run Windows XP Pro. I have no idea what the file is or does or how it got there. Can I safely delete this file or should I leave it there because it has a purpose?
