Windows 2k standby issue
hey guys-
I recently installed windows 2k on my parents desktop. They want to set power options so that it goes to standby after a set time. The stand by works, but you have to hit the power button to get it to wake up. They would like it to wake up after mouse movement or typing on the keyboard. I have looked all over, including the BIOS, and i can not find a setting for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I am unsure of what you have done, but it is possible that you are confusing Standby Mode with Hibernation mode.
As I understand it, Hibernation mode configures your computer to shut down in such a way that you must perform a "warm boot" later, by 'waking your computer up' by pressing the power button. Standby mode (as I have just verified on my own W2k machine) will allow you to wake your computer up by twiddling with the mouse or pressing a keyboard button. Try this: Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Display Open "Screen Saver" Tab Select "Power" Set "Power schemes" to Home/Office Desk Select the "Hibernate" Tab and *uncheck* enable Hibernate support if it is checked Click the "Power Schemes" Tab again Select "Turn off Monitor" to Never Select "Turn off Hard Disks" to Never Go to "System Standby" pull down menu, and select "1 min" just so you can test and see if this works for you like it did for me. Close out any active open programs (like streaming radio). Don't touch anything and wait for 1 minute for your computer to go into Standby Mode. After the computer enters an obvious 'powered down' type state, see if you can bring your computer back online by pressing a keyboard key (I pressed the spacebar), or by twiddling the mouse. If this works for you, then you may want to go back to the "System Standby" pulldown menu and set the System Standby inaction activation interval to be something more reasonable, like 15 or 20 minutes. I truly apologize if this turns out to be exactly what you have done before! This worked for me, so if it ends up not working for you, then you might have some other system conflict that I don't know how to resolve (but someone else here might). Good luck! |
