xp sp1a sp2??

Ok I have xp home which I bought at least a year ago. I've never installed it on anything. Now I'm going to install it on at least one computer. What is slipstreaming? How is the best way to get the service packs? Do I need both sp1a and sp2 or not? Is there a way to download the service packs on a windows 98 machine for use in installing on an xp machine?

Thanks.

Slipstreaming is a method of updating the files on a Windows XP disk to create essentially a "factory" Windows XP SP2 disk. You can use either Windows XP or Windows XP SP1 for the base disk.

There are a few threads on the BBS on how to do it.

I have to wonder how you know of slipstreaming but don't know what it is since I am assuming you read it from the other thread on slipstreaming.. maybe I am wrong Here is the other thread talking about Slipstreaming. Basically it will install both XP and updates, while saving space somehow... not sure why

You only need to install SP2.

You can download SP2 on the windows 98 machine and transfer it over LAN or burn it to a CD and then put it on the XP machine to install. Not sure if you can create a slipstreamed CD in another OS besides XP if that's what you were gonna try and do.

Sure, you can create a slipstreamed CD on anything. All you are doing is copying the contents of the CD into a folder, extracting the service pack files into another folder, integrating them, and burning a CD.

The reason Windows XP SP2 slipstream is a smaller installation is that the files become integrated. After the installation, there is no $$Uninstall files nor Service Pack files. Those are a total of about 1 GB.
