Can you boot in safe mode?

What are the temps in the bios like? Does it always do this at the same point? It doesn't sound like overheating, because the diags ran (I don't think you can repair bad clusters). If it reboots in the bios it sounds like a hardware problem, but overwise I think it is Windows. You could try doing a repair install, although I don't know if packard bell ships XP disks and not repair disks.

Nope. If the bad clusters on in the area that WinXP is usually located, about the only thing to do is get a new hard drive, install WinXP, put the old hard drive in as a slave and retrieve all the personal data from it.

Would a surface scan in scandisk move the data? Wasn't scandisk on the Win98 bootdisks? Maybe it's worth a try doing that, although I don't know how to perform a surface scan from DOS.

I'm not sure, but I don't think the DOS scandisk will read NTFS partitions.

Boot with the XP cd and use the repair console. Log into the administrator account and at the command prompt, the command for running a thorough scan is CHKDSK /R .

If the Seagate diags show bad sectors, the drive is shot. Get a new drive ready and recover her data before you try doing anything else.

I agree with everyone else. If the Seagate diagnostics show bad sectors all you can do is replace the drive, as the bad sectors will only get worse. So you will have to get a new drive, slave it and recover as much of her information as you can, before the sectors get worse than they already are, and before you loose the ability to do anything at all with the drive.

ANYWAYS, judging by your replies id go along with the drive being shot. but most importantly , is going off what you guys are saying is that i can retrieve her existing data by slaving it . looks like this is the way to go . when it comes to pc,s , my sister is completely brain dead.
thanx again for all your replies fellas , highly appreciated. speak soon.
