Missing Files???

Here's the deal. I'm fixing up this old Dell Inspiron 3500. It's running Win98. I'm basically done with the job, it's just this pesky message that always comes up when its in DOS mode just before the Desktop loads. Basically it says, vredir.vxd is missing...press any key to continue (there's really a bunch more than that, but it's the main point) and then after you press a key, it says dfs.vxd is missing...press any key to continue. The two missing files don't seem to be hindering the operation of the system, but they must have some purpose. The messages say something about reinstalling them, but it doesn't say from where. My guess is the Win98 install cd. But how would I go about installing just those two files. Does it really matter if I install these or not? Everything seems to be in perfect working order on the machine.

simple solution uninstall then reinstall diaulup networking.
control panel
add remove programs
windows setup
communications
remove checkmark from dialup networking
reboot
go back into the windows setup communications and put the check mark back again and reboot
that should do it

Would another name for Dial-Up Networking be Communications?

Well...bad news. I did what you said, it didn't work. But hey, I didn't have the Win98 cd, so, when and if I get my hands on that, I'll try again. There are also a bunch of drivers that I need to reinstall. Whatever, thanks for the help.

be sure you get the correct Win98 version.
right click the my computer icon on the desktop then choose properties.
there you will find the version of Win98. Win98 is the original recipee.
Win98SE is the second version of 98.
You should try to find a cd of the correct version.
do you need those files?
if you have a dialup internet connection you do need them.
if you have dsl or broadband i am thinking that you don't.
anyway you want to get rid of the annoying messages about missing files.

If the OS was second edition, would it say Microsoft Windows 98SE under the System title in General Tab in System Properties? And is the 4.10.1998 underneath that a version number of just a date of release or something? (It only says Micrsoft Windows 98 btw.)

I do have a Windows 98 SE cd from another computer (also a Dell) and it doesn't work when it asks me to insert a Windows 98 cd. Is this a sign that is indeed regular Windows 98?

4.10.1998 is original 98 - 98SE is 4.10.2222.

Oh, okay. Thanks. I'll look around for a Win98 cd and try the installation again.
