PCI device preventing W2K booting?
Have just done a clean reinstall of W2K + SP4 on this Dell 4100.
In Device Manager there is one Unknown Device showing PCI Device (PCI bus 0, device 31, function 3), everything else appears correctly installed. Not sure what device this is – the video driver I downloaded from Dell & the sound card and network cards work fine. There are no other cards installed. If I try to disable the PCI device, Windows want to reinstall it and I am now getting a BSOD on startup, only when the PC is SHUT DOWN, whether this device is disbaled or enabled: STOP: 0x0000000A IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Address 8042CFD0 base at 80400000 Date Stamp 3ee6c002 ntoskrnl.exe How can I find out what this PCI Device is and get hold of the driver?

You need the Intel chipset identification utility. I believe the "PCI Device" is the SMBus controller and this will take care of it.
http://support.euro.dell.com/fr/en/f...T_P3C_4100&st= Get the IDE drivers while you are at it - they will improve hard drive performance. http://support.euro.dell.com/fr/en/f...T_P3C_4100&st= Your stop error is a bad driver - refresh your drivers after you install the 2 I linked to. |

Thanks glc, I 'll install these 2 when I get to the customer next week. Should I install them in SAFE mode?
If you're right about the PCI Device being the SMBus Controller - then if I understand correctly, the "PCI Device" is a red herring from Windows. I was going to start pulling out the cards one by one but that wouldn't have solved anything - would it? |

Well, installing the Intel chipset drivers did the trick - I'll try & remember to look out for that another time.
BTW I can't remember if I checked but would the ! icon for the missing PCI Device in "Other Devices" also have shown up in System Devices for the SMBus? |
