Windows 98 Sound problems
Hey,
I'm on a friends computer here, she's having problems with the sound. The sound is all fuzzy, and when I went to her sound settings in control panel, they weren't there. I'm lost, I search for them and I can't seem to find them anywhere on the computer. any ideas? Thanks in advance Tara! |

Check the audio cable connections and make sure they're all solidly plugged in.

. . . if the connections all seem OK:
Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control . . . and check the volume levels for each type. You should see controls for Wave, CD, MIDI ... and if you click on "Advanced" you can view the levels for Microphone, Line, Aux, and others. If the levels are set to the highest volume, that can cause some speakers to distort ("sound fuzzy"). Also, if the Microphone line is not muted, the volume is all the way up, and the microphone is "on" - this can cause a noticeable hiss. It's a good idea to mute a microphone when not in use. If none of this helps, try looking in Start/Settings/Control Panel/System ... and under the Sound, etc category, click on the plus (+) sign to view the list. If the devices listed seem to be obviously wrong = then the incorrect drivers might be loaded, & you'll need to remove the current incorrect devices and reinstall the correct drivers. Best of luck . . . Gary |

If you're not using the line-in, you may want to mute that as well. I've noticed that it can cause a hiss, especially if the volume is turned up.

Did it work OK before?
Was anything added to the unit? Go to Add/Remove Programs, Windows setup, Multimedia and see what is installed.
