Kernel?

Hi, what exactly is a kernel and what does it do because I was just wondering what it is cos you see it when you install operating systems

The kernel is the main part of the OS. It is usually responsible for things like memory management, tasks and processes, and even disk management.

ok I think I understand what it is, so what would you call the part of an operating system that isn't the Kernel like Windows XP desktop

The desktop and similar features are often known as the GUI (graphical user interface). Thats a general term applied to many different operating systems and programs.
