Working on a old computer.
PII400mhz, 96ram, 6-gig HDD, WIN98SE, CD-ROM, Floppy. Nothing fancy, but great for the kids. This is a combo of parts from various past upgrades. I can't get it to boot from CD-ROM. changed it in BIOS as well. tried a downloaded boot disk but I end up at a "A:\" prompt, what do I do from there? tried a scandisk.exe - no errors found tried a fdisk.exe - end up at the same old "A" prompt. The messages I get are: "searching for boot record from floppy - not found" "searching for boot record from IDE-0 - O.K." "missing operating system" Help... Did the boot disk give you the option of CD support? If not, download another boot disk for 98SE from www.bootdisk.com or use one created on another SE machine. Till you get CD support you have a hard row to hoe.

If I select option #1 boot with cd support.
I see a lot of drivers scrolling up the screen, PCI bus completes, message stating: "preparing to start your computer this may take a few minutes" Diagnostic tools successfully loaded to drive D. Then I see the dreaded "A" prompt. I even tried swapping the CD-Rom out. No changes. In BIOS, the mobo does see the CD-ROM, I disconnected it to be sure. IT'S ALIVE!
I've been reading other posts, when I discovered what I was doing wrong. I used the boot disk, then got to the "A" prompt. But I was unsure about typing "A;\>format c:" then "D:\setup". Then the computer took over from there, installing the OS from CD-ROM. THANKS AGAIN ! |

And one additional add on question. When you saw the diagnostic disk on D: did you also get a splash message that the CD was on E:?
That is where it normally goes with a 98 emergency boot disk but it gets to somewhere else with some boot disks you download. It isn't critical that you know where it is as you are still learning about loading operating systems, but it is something that you probably need to recognize if you will be doing it again. |
